Amber Broughton is a visual artist living and working on the Beara Peninsula, in West Cork, Ireland. Amber’s practice is predominantly drawing based, focusing on themes around biodiversity and the environment.

In her art practice, Amber is committed to expressing the philosophical narratives that underpin her life, through her artistic vision and imagination, whilst at the same time, maintaining her duty as an advocate for the natural world.

Here Amber reflects on her work’s recognisable characteristic of blank space:

“I often include areas of empty space in my work as I am interested in creating visual scapes that are not over saturated with narrative, and that invite playful thought, self reflection and memory.”

What's happening in my studio...

I'm just back from a magical trip to Scotland where I took part in the John Busby Seabird drawing course. We spent 6 days out drawing and painting on the cliffs and islands off the east coast, in all weather conditions! Some highlights were that we had the privilege of visited Bass Rock and Fidra, two protected islands that are only accessible to researchers. Fidra is the island that inspired the book treasure island and it was here that I got to see puffins for the first time! And baby herringulls and their eggs! Another highlight just had to be the wonderful tutors and fellow students that I met on the course! We all became this lovely encouraging community by the end of the week and I miss them all!
